Sarah Harrison-Powell-Ellis-Merritt, affectionately known as Sallie, was born on October 25, 1861, in Brunswick County, Virginia, to Sarah Jane Harrison and Charles Smith. Sallie was raised alongside her siblings - John, James, Benjamin, Samuel, and Richard - on the Harrison Farm in rural Ante, Brunswick County.
Sallie Harrison-Powell-Ellis-Merritt is documented in the U.S. Federal Census records for Brunswick County, Virginia, in the years 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1950. The 1890 Census records are largely unavailable due to a fire at the United States Department of Commerce building in Washington, D.C., on January 10, 1921, which destroyed most of the records from that year.
Sallie married her first husband, Robert H. Powell, on Wednesday, February 4, 1880, in Brunswick County, Virginia. Robert was the son of Milton and Parthemia Powell.
