Samuel Harrison, also known as Sam Harrison, was born about 1858 in Brunswick County, Virginia. Samuel was raised alongside his siblings - John, James, Benjamin, Sallie, and Richard - on the Harrison Farm in rural Ante, Brunswick County.
Samuel Harrison appears in the 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 U.S. Federal Census records for Greensville County, Virginia. Unfortunately, most of the 1890 Census records were destroyed in a fire at the United States Department of Commerce building in Washington, D.C., on January 10, 1921.
Samuel Harrison married Hester (Malone) Stewart on Thursday, February 15, 1883, in Greensville County, Virginia. Hester’s parents were Guy Powell and Mary.
Samuel and Hester lived in the Hicksford District of Greensville County, Virginia. Greensville County was established in 1781, and Hicksford was its first settlement. This community developed where the Fort Road—now called Dry Bread Road—crossed the Meherrin River, connecting eastern Virginia to Fort Christianna in Brunswick County. When the county government was formed in 1781, Emporia, centrally located within Greensville County, was designated as the county seat.
